how do i get rid of cigarette odours from my leather settee?

how do i get trid of bad cigarette odours from my leather settee i have been given by a relative, it stinks of smoke and i have tried everything including fabreze but it still stinks and the smell is bad for my 2 young kids to.so any advice wud be greatly appreciated. .

1. Leather does not naturally harbour smells despite what David has said. All the times we have encountered this problem it has been in the inners of the furniture, ie. cushions etc. if you can remove these make sure you clean these or replace them. You can go to the lengths that David suggests although it is not always practical to do this.
   
   
   
   Clean the leather with a good water based cleaner and use leather protector. If you do this over a period of time, clean the inners as much as you can and clean/febreeze any fabric areas hopefully the smell will dissipate.
   
   
   
   Do not use febreeze on the leather, only on the fabric parts of the suite. Use a good foam cleaner on the leather and do it regularly.
   
   
   
   There are leather aroma sprays which can be used to mask any lingering smells.
2. Leather is porous and can indeed harbor smells. I deal with cigarette, pet ,etc odor professionally on leather as part of our business. We actually use a giant ionizer. it is an "ozone machine" we purchased one but you could either have a disaster responce company take the piece for a couple of days ( they have to deal with the aftermath of flooding, fires, people who have died and not been found for a period etc so deal with odor alot) or see if you can rent it. we have 3 workshops so one of the bathrooms is the "ozone room" we place the piece in there with the cushions and pillows apart if possible, plug in the machine and seal the door up with tape. We leave a piece over the weekend and on monday morning it smells like the air after it has just rained.
   
   This works on strong cat urine etc. most spray on products will simply mask, if it was urine there are some spray on enzyme based products but I doubt they would work for smoke.
